This textbook is a systematic guide to the extensive field of spirituality. Kees Waaijman charts the multiform phenomenon of spirituality: the spirituality of ordinary people, the great spiritual traditions and the force of counter-movements. From the foundation of this survey he answers questions like: What exactly is spirituality? What forms can a scholarly approach take? Finally, the book provides methodic access to the study of spirituality, focusing on the following questions: Which are the different forms of spirituality and how can we describe them? How can spiritual texts be given a reliable reading? Which themes can be distinguished in the field of spirituality and what would be a meaningful way to address them? What do we mean by spiritual guidance and what can we learn from it? This textbook has no equal. It is indispensable to scholars wishing to study the subject, but also to others who want to learn about spirituality.

Extensive overview of marital law and practice on the eve of the Reformation, followed with new views on marriage from Erasmus and Heinrich Bullinger. The second part of the book is biographical, showing Bucer's proposals to regulate marriage and liberalize divorce, with attention to his own marriages and his dealings with the marriages of others. Close study is made of his thoughts on the marital problems of Henry VIII and the bigamy of Philip of Hesse. The largest part of the book is a systematic description of Bucer's views on marriage, divorce, and celibacy, based on a number of neglected treatises on these subjects. The book concludes with an evaluation of Bucer's thoughts on his love-centered theology and how his ideas were received. [publisher's description]

This work comprises a detailed study of Bucer's thinking on ecclesiastical office. The Strasbourg reformer exercised a great influence on Calvin, among others. This exploration does not only contribute to the knowledge of the body of thoughts and views of this often ignored reformer, whose importance is increasingly being recognised. It also contains a large amount of material which is extremely valuable for current discussion - theological and practical - on office and structure within the Church. The author has based his research on various rare editions found in libraries all over Europe. He also used many unpublished sources from the abundant archives in Strasbourg.
